Bring on the Storm

While I was driving back to our headquarters with a co-worker recently, my phone rang.  It was my assistant, calling to tell me that a tornado was approaching the building. She wanted us to be warned and to seek safety.

We began to scan the horizon for signs of the coming twister. Suddenly, right before us, a funnel cloud began to form out of the eerily dark, greenish sky. I could see the circular motion and the telltale, downward extension of the clouds. But, as suddenly as it began to spin, it lost its shape and was gone.

I’m not sure what we would have done if the tornado had touched down; we were too busy being impressed by an unpredictable, inimitable power to contemplate our own safety. We were seeing the Creator’s handiwork up close!

Since that time, I have made a commitment. Whenever I see the hand of God emerging in quieter but equally awesome ways – redeeming a soul, restoring a life, reconciling a family – I want to run to the scene. I want to marvel at the miraculous. I want to be a spiritual storm-chaser.

At Prison Fellowship, we have front-row seats to the messy but incredible work of God in the lives of prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families – and you can, too! As you join with us by volunteering, praying, and giving, you will see how our Lord, the Master of the wind and the waves, can use the tornados of life to draw people to a faith that saves and transforms them. When you’ve seen that miracle at work, you will join me in saying, “Bring on the storm!”
